Self-Healing Wind Turbine Blades

Self-Healing Wind Turbine Blades Self-Healing Wind Turbine Blades Self-Healing Wind Turbine BladesExtreme weather, lightning strikes, manufacturing defects, delamination those are just some of the factors that cause about 3,800 wind turbine blades to fail worldwide each year. That number represents just one in 200 of the roughly 700,000 blades in operation, but a single failure can cost up to $1 million in repairs, especially if the turbine sits miles offshore.Mechanical engineers from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee hope to put a dent in that number with a new self-healing blade system that mimics the human circulatory system. The self-healing system, developed by UWM mechanical engineering professor Ryoichi Amano and his colleagues, has passed proof-of-concept tests, but still needs improvements before it can hit the market. The gruppe reported the results online in March in ASMEs Journal of Energy Resources Technology. The idea welches to mold flat material samples, test them b y bending, and see if the material could heal itself, says Arun Kumar Koralagundi Matt, a UWM graduate student. Id say it was a success. The self-healing blade (the one at bottom in a wind-turbine testing rig. Image University of Wisconsin-MilwaukeeKoralagundi Matt and his colleagues first made samples with several layers of plain-weave fiberglass like that used in many wind-turbine blades. They mixed Grubbs catalyst, commonly used in synthetic organic chemistry, with an epoxy resin, and evenly dispersed it throughout the fiberglass. The researchers then filled ultrathin borosilicate glass capillary tubes as long as a fingernail with a liquid healing werber that causes the epoxy to harden when the two come into contact in the presence of Grubbs catalyst. They then laid the tubes lengthwise in different layers and sections of the fiberglass, depending on the test.Ideally, the tubes should act like blood vessels throughout the body, says Koralagundi Matt, who has since graduated and is now working as a product engineer at Carnes, an HVAC systems manufacturer in Madison. The researchers then used a universal flexing machine and standard tensile tests to gauge the strain, stress, and other properties of the material. As soon as they heard the fiberglass crack, the researchers ended each test and examined the areas of stress where the glass capillary tubes also broke. At that point, the healing agent would seep into the cracks near the tubes, react with the Grubbs catalyst, and harden the epoxy. The researchers also built and tested a wind turbine prototype, using two standard blades and one embedded with the self-healing system. After stressing the blade and allowing it about an hour to complete the healing process, the material recovered about 90 percent of the flexural strength it had lost from fractures and other damage. Koralagundi Matt says that recovery was as good as or better than that of similar self-healing materials and could add years to the life of the bla de.Still, adding the tubes reduces the fiberglasss average tensile strength and flexural strength by 25 percent and 9 percent, respectively, and Amanos team is now figuring out how to add more tubes to the material without weakening it, and how to make the blades easy to manufacture as well, says Koralagundi Matt. For Further DiscussionThe idea was to mold flat material samples, test them by bending, and see if the material could heal itself.Arun Kumar Koralagundi Matt, UWM graduate student

How Job Seekers Can Speed Up the Hiring Process

How Job Seekers Can Speed Up the Hiring ProcessHow Job Seekers Can Speed Up the Hiring ProcessWhen a potential employer is moving the hiring process along at a glacial pace, is there anything a job candidate can do to help speed things up? The short answer is yes. As I explain in this post, there are several strategies you can use to motivate an employer to come to a hiring decision more quickly.Despite low unemployment and the ongoing demand for skilled talent, many job seekers find that the hiring process can drag on for a while. Its not unusual for candidates to take part in three or even four interviews and, as a result, wait weeks for a final hiring decision.Whats causing the delay? Companies are being very cautious. They want to be certain theyre choosing the right person for the job in buchung to avoid a costly hiring mistake. As a job seeker, understand that you might have to wait longer than youd like to receive an employment offer. But that doesnt mean you have to sit back a nd twiddle your thumbs. Dont assume theres nothing you can do to accelerate the hiring process. Here are three ways you can potentially help the employer come to a decision more quickly.Approach 1 Dont leave the interview uninformedYour efforts should begin during the job interview. Do not part ways with the hiring manager until you confirm that they have all the information needed from you, at least for the moment. For example, you might ask Do you have any other questions for me? or Do you need to know anything else about me that we havent already discussed? You want to make koranvers that if the employer has any potential reservations that you have a chance to address them. You might learn, for instance, that the hiring manager questions whether you have the right technical skills for the position. You can provide more insight into your qualifications and note how youve used the skills in question in previous roles. Or you can explain how you plan to acquire training in the areas the employer feels you need to strengthen. Also, make sure you know the next steps in the hiring process before you leave the meeting. If its the first interview, ask What does your timeline look like for hiring? If youve completed what you believe to be the final interview, ask, When might I expect to hear a decision? This not only provides insight into what the employer is thinking but also helps you know when to follow up with the hiring manager, if necessary.SEARCH JOB OPENINGSApproach 2 Follow up, in more ways than oneAfter an interview, your No. 1 priority is remaining top of mind with the hiring manager. The best way to do so is by following up. This requires a delicate hand. You want to be persistent. But you dont want to be a pest or come across as too eager.Be sure to send a thank-you note within 24 hours of an interview. Email is acceptable, but consider sending a handwritten note via regular mail as well. Its a nice touch and can help you stand out. Sending a thank-you no te also reaffirms your interest in the position, and its an opportunity to emphasize your qualifications. If a week goes by and you havent heard back from the hiring manager, pick up the phone and call them. If the employer has no update for you, ask when you can expect to hear back and again stress your interest in the role.As you follow up, be aware of your tone. You cant be too demanding. Its important to be considerate, diplomatic and polite when asking busy hiring managers for updates. Try to keep your emotions out of it. Thats easier said than done, of course - especially if you really want the job. But over the years, Ive seen too many candidates hurt their chances by getting overly emotional when speaking to hiring managers at this stage. If you havent been given a decision after another week passes, call the employer once more and ask if youre still in consideration for the role. At this point, theres no need to beat around the bush. You want to know if youre viewed as a str ong contender for the position or not.The way the hiring manager reacts to your inquiries at these various stages of follow-up can tell you a lot about where you stand. If the employer welcomes your calls and asks that you remain patient as the hiring process progresses, chances are good youre still in the running for the role. If your contact seems reluctant to hear from you - or you cant seem to get a hold of them - that might be a sign you need to move on.Approach 3 Make it clear that your search is moving forwardOne additional way to potentially speed up the hiring process is to remind the hiring manager that you are still on the job hunt. Let your contact know youve received interest from and have been interviewing with other companies (only if this if the case, of course). This sends a clear signal that youre not sitting and waiting by the phone forever - and lets the employer in question know theyre not the only business competing for your talents. If youve stopped your job search, start it up again. No matter how far youve progressed in the hiring process, continue to actively job hunt. Dont slow your efforts until you have an offer in hand. Theres always the chance that a seemingly surefire opportunity falls through. Who knows, you may end up with multiple job offers to consider. And that will only give you more leverage if you need to encourage a top-choice employer to come to a decision.Learn how Robert Half can help you in your job search Paul McDonald Paul McDonald is senior executive director at Robert Half. Three smart ways bosses and employees should talk to each other

Three smart ways bosses and employees should talk to each other Three smart ways bosses and employees should talk to each other Face-to-face meetings, whether conducted in-person or over an internet connection, are how we build relationships in the workplace. One-on-one meetings between employees and managers are especially important for strengthening ties and addressing concerns before they become problems. But a one-on-one with a boss can easily go off the rails. One person can talk too much, another can talk too little, or someone can go off topic and never return. You want to end a one-on-one feeling like something got done, not like you’ve circled around the issue. Or one of them can feel unfairly judged and protective of his or her ego. Here is the best way to hold a regularly-occurring, structured one-on-one so that you have a strong relationship with your boss.Be consistent with them and don’t cancelHow often should you do them? Often enough that it becomes a habit. The employee handbook at 18F, the U.S. government’s digital service agency, suggests half-hour weekly 1:1s. 18F says that our minds th ink in weekly chunks and if you’re holding your one-on-ones too infrequently, managers may miss hearing out on key details. The agency also believes that a week is longest you should go between meetings if you’re working with employees on specific issues: “If you’re only able to help someone change course once or twice a month, they’ll go a lot longer down an ineffective path before you can help.”Of course, the cadence of your one-on-ones depends on your team’s size and goals. This could mean daily, weekly or monthly. The most important thing is to be consistent with doing them.Make your one-on-one a repeating event on the calendar. You can reschedule of course, but don’t cancel one-on-ones. Cancelling signals that you’re not prioritizing the relationship with your colleague.Make an agendaThe first step to making a structured meeting is to have a plan. This doesn’t mean making the whole interaction a rehearsed choreography, but a loose structure helps to focus th e discussion.Structuring the conversation means knowing what will be discussed, so people on both sides can jot down what they want to bring up. Harvard Business Review recommends giving employees a heads up if the one-on-one is around professional development, so employees have time to prepare and reflect.18F suggests dividing the meeting into the employee’s agenda, your agenda and the future. That way, it prioritizes the discussion around what the employee wants to discuss, so if time runs over, at least that gets covered. What to talk aboutOpen-ended questions help the one-on-one feel like a guided conversation and not a status report. Some people will come in with an agenda that they’re ready to discuss, while others may need some questions to get them to open up. Open-ended questions can be as broad as “How are you doing?” to as specific as “What are  the challenges you’ve faced this week?”If it’s your first one-on-one, Lara Hogan, Kickstarter’s VP of Engineeri ng, suggests structuring it around getting to know your employee’s work rhythm. How do they like to receive feedback- publicly or privately, in Slack direct messages or in one-on-ones? Hogan said that she asks her employees, “What makes you grumpy? How will I know if you’re grumpy? How can I help you when you’re grumpy?” in their first one-on-ones.Both sides of the one-on-one should take notes. It makes us better listeners. It reminds us of what was discussed and keeps us accountable to what action items were discussed for future one-on-ones. Doc Norton, software consultant expert, said he emails a summary with action items to his employees after one-on-ones, so that they know he is committed to their growth and that he plans to follow-up on what was discussed: “The One on One session will grow meaningless if issues are shared, but no resolve is realized.”Above all, it’s important to be flexible with the discussion. That means knowing when to nod and listen and when to jump in with solutions.“Sometimes, people will come to the 1:1 just needing to complain or get something off their chest. In these cases, listening, asking questions, and making sure they feel heard is all you need to do,” 18F said. “But other times, there’s a problem to be solved, and in those cases you’ll want to talk through solutions, suggest directions, and steer towards action.”

Heres why your gut instinct is wrong at work and how to know when it isnt

Here’s why your gut instinct is wrong at work â€" and how to know when it isn’t Here’s why your gut instinct is wrong at work â€" and how to know when it isn’t Let’s say you’re interviewing a new applicant for a job and you feel something is off. You can’t quite put your finger on it, but you’re a bit uncomfortable with this person. She says all the right things, her resume is great, she’d be a perfect hire for this job - except your gut tells you otherwise.Should you go with your gut?In such situations, your default reaction should be to be suspicious of your gut. Research shows that job candidate interviews are actually poor indicators of future job performance.Unfortunately, most employers tend to trust their guts over their heads and give jobs to people they like and perceive as part of their in-group, rather than simply the most qualified applicant. In other situations, however, it actually does make sense to rely on gut instinct to make a decision.Yet research on decision-making shows that most business leaders don’t know when to rely on their gut and when not to. While most studies have focused on executives and managers , research shows the same problem applies to doctors, therapists and other professionals. This is the kind of challenge I encounter when I consult with companies on how to better handle workplace relationships. Research that I and others have conducted on decision-making offers some clues on when we should - and shouldn’t - listen to our guts. The gut or the headThe reactions of our gut are rooted in the more primitive, emotional and intuitive part of our brains that ensured survival in our ancestral environment. Tribal loyalty and immediate recognition of friend or foe were especially useful for thriving in that environment. In modern society, however, our survival is much less at risk, and our gut is more likely to compel us to focus on the wrong information to make workplace and other decisions. For example, is the job candidate mentioned above similar to you in race, gender, socioeconomic background? Even seemingly minor things like clothing choices, speaking style and gesturing can make a big difference in determining how you evaluate another person. According to research on nonverbal communication, we like people who mimic our tone, body movements and word choices. Our guts automatically identify those people as belonging to our tribe and being friendly to us, raising their status in our eyes. This quick, automatic reaction of our emotions represents the autopilot system of thinking, one of the two systems of thinking in our brains. It makes good decisions most of the time but also regularly makes certain systematic thinking errors that scholars refer to as cognitive biases. The other thinking system, known as the intentional system, is deliberate and reflective. It takes effort to turn on but it can catch and override the thinking errors committed by our autopilots. This way, we can address the systematic mistakes made by our brains in our workplace relationships and other areas of life.Keep in mind that the autopilot and intentional systems are only simp lifications of more complex processes, and that there is debate about how they work in the scientific community. However, for everyday life, this systems-level approach is very useful in helping us manage our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. In regard to tribal loyalty, our brains tend to fall for the thinking error known as the “halo effect,” which causes some characteristics we like and identify with to cast a positive “halo” on the rest of the person, and its opposite the “horns effect,” in which one or two negative traits change how we view the whole. Psychologists call this “anchoring,” meaning we judge this person through the anchor of our initial impressions.Overriding the gutNow let’s go back to our job interview example.Say that the person went to the same college you did. You are more likely to hit it off. Yet, just because a person is similar to you does not mean she will do a good job. Likewise, just because someone is skilled at conveying friendliness does not mean she will do well at tasks that require technical skills rather than people skills. The research is clear that our intuitions don’t always serve us well in making the best decisions (and, for a business person, bringing in the most profit). Scholars call intuition a troublesome decision tool that requires adjustments to function properly. Such reliance on intuition is especially harmful to workplace diversity and paves the path to bias in hiring, including in terms of race, disability, gender and sex.Despite the numerous studies showing that structured interventions are needed to overcome bias in hiring, unfortunately business leaders and HR personnel tend to over-rely on unstructured interviews and other intuitive decision-making practices. Due to the autopilot system’s overconfidence bias, a tendency to evaluate our decision-making abilities as better than they are, leaders often go with their guts on hires and other business decisions rather than use analytical de cision-making tools that have demonstrably better outcomes.A good fix is to use your intentional system to override your tribal sensibilities to make a more rational, less biased choice that will more likely result in the best hire. You could note ways in which the applicant is different from you - and give them “positive points” for it - or create structured interviews with a set of standardized questions asked in the same order to every applicant. So if your goal is to make the best decisions, avoid such emotional reasoning, a mental process in which you conclude that what you feel is true, regardless of the actual reality. When your gut may be rightLet’s take a different situation. Say you’ve known someone in your work for many years, collaborated with her on a wide variety of projects and have an established relationship. You already have certain stable feelings about that person, so you have a good baseline.Imagine yourself having a conversation with her about a potenti al collaboration. For some reason, you feel less comfortable than usual. It’s not you - you’re in a good mood, well-rested, feeling fine. You’re not sure why you’re not feeling good about the interaction since there’s nothing obviously wrong. What’s going on?Most likely, your intuitions are picking up subtle cues about something being off. Perhaps that person is squinting and not looking you in the eye or smiling less than usual. Our guts are good at picking up such signals, as they are fine-tuned to pick up signs of being excluded from the tribe.Maybe it’s nothing. Maybe that person is having a bad day or didn’t get enough sleep the night before. However, that person may also be trying to pull the wool over your eyes. When people lie, they behave in ways that are similar to other indicators of discomfort, anxiety and rejection, and it’s really hard to tell what’s causing these signals.Overall, this is a good time to take your gut reaction into account and be mo re suspicious than usual. The gut is vital in our decision-making to help us notice when something might be amiss. Yet in most situations when we face significant decisions about workplace relationships, we need to trust our head more than our gut in order to make the best decisions. This article was originally published on The Conversation. These are the sleep issues couples most fight about

These are the sleep issues couples most fight about These are the sleep issues couples most fight about America has a serious sleep problem. Twenty-five percent of Americans develop acute insomnia each year, up to 10% of Americans are likely to develop chronic insomnia, 27% of working American women develop a  sleep disorder compared to 20% of working American men that do so a year- and all of these contribute to lost productivity related to insomnia that costs the US economy just about $63 billion a year.Maybe it’s more accurate to say, America has several serious sleep problems. The predictors are pretty varied, ranging from pre-existing medical conditions like depression, mental conditions induced by trauma, to provisional anxieties like work-related stress.Recently the fine folks over at the luxury mattress company, Saatva, surveyed 1,500 participants to explore all the intricate details regarding the most common factors habitually keeping people from obtaining uality sleep.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Pillow fightsOf course, there are other bedroom skirmishes to be won. The infamous snoring partner has appeared in several recent studies  detailing the key factors keeping many Americas perpetually shy of a full night’s rest. Thirty-nine percent of respondents in Saatva’s survey said they find their partner’s snoring “irritating.”  Females showcased a significantly lower tolerance than male participants with 55% of women expressing frustration at their bellowing bedfellow versus 33% of men.   Below are the things that most annoyed partners in the boudoir:1. Snoring (39%)2. Stealing Covers (22%)3. A partner that wants to cuddle too often in bed (11%)Sometimes any one or all of these habits are simply too much to overcome. Fourteen-percent of couples reported occasionally sleeping in different beds while 23% of couples reported  often  sleeping in different beds â€" with 10% of married couples that lived in the same home reported doing so. Respondents 54 and older were found to be 15% less likely than 25 to 34-year-olds to share a bed with their spouse or partner. For those that chose to sleep alone, for whatever reason, nearly half preferred to do so with two pillows, though 20% reported sleeping with as many as four.  Some partners can’t be turned away, however. Of the 1,097 people surveyed, a whopping 60% reported sleeping with an animal â€" 30% cuddled with dogs, 27% with cats and 10% said they slept with multiple animals in addition to their human partner.Plush it real goodSixty-six percent of the respondents in Saatva’s sleep survey reported occasionally sleeping in the nude, while 20% said they make a habit of it. Male surveyees tended to do so more than ladies. Of those that reported always sleeping in the nude, 20% said they preferred to do so when it is particularly warm, compared to the 10% that liked to snooze buck and chilly. On balance, the survey participants liked sleeping in cooler environments . Men were slightly more sympathetic to a warmer setting than women (22% versus 18% respectively.)Firmness (of mattress) was actually found to be a divisive factor amongst couples. One in three respondents said they got into arguments with their significant other over the plushness, or lack thereof, of their shared pad. Twelve percent of respondents favored a firm mattress, with men being 5% more likely than women to feel this way. Thirty-percent said they like it plush, though the vast majority (58%) favor a firm mattress with a plush top. Thirty-percent of the couples featured in the Saatva survey made a concerted effort to achieve harmony despite their matress disagreements,  by putting two twin sized mattress together, one firm, one plushy. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Inappropriate Behavior at Work

Inappropriate Behavior at Work Inappropriate Behavior at Work We often express who we are by our behavior, including what we wear and how we speak. Sometimes, however, these expressions of our individuality go against our employers rules or workplace norms. Whether through official or unofficial policy, our employers may expect us to dress or speak a certain way, or more likely, to avoid what they consider inappropriate behavior. Not everyone agrees that one should conform to their employers expectations. The ability to be themselves everywhere, including at work, regardless of what others think, is a value they hold dear. These people arent wrong, but the belief that an employer shouldnt have a say over inappropriate behavior could be. Youre Wearing That?! Do you like to express yourself through your attire? If your employer has a dress code, it is essential to follow it. It is also necessary to wear clothing that is considered right for your industry. Adding your individual style to that is usually okay, but flouting the rules or norms is not. It could send a message to your boss, coworkers, and customers that you dont take your work seriously. Examples of attire that could be considered inappropriate for work may include clothing that is too casual (leggings and sweatpants, shorts, and ripped jeans), show too much skin, or is unkempt. Some may consider this unfair but whether it is or isnt is irrelevant. When there are rules, you must follow them, or work to change them. If expressing yourself through your clothing style is extremely important to you, rather than bristling under the restrictions of what may be too conservative a work environment for your tastes, instead look for a job that allows you to wear the type of attire you desire. It is, in fact, one of the factors you should consider when choosing an occupation or evaluating a job offer. Some types of clothing are inappropriate for particular work environments and occupations but are perfectly fine for others. For instance, an associate in an accounting firm wearing a tank top that shows off his tattoos would stand out like a sore thumb, but a graphic artist working in an advertising agency who dresses similarly would probably fit right in. You Said What?! Many employers consider using profanity in the workplace inappropriate behavior. While cursing has become somewhat commonplace in todays society, they form negative opinions of anyone who regularly drops the F-bomb or other swear words at work. They think it shows a lack of professionalism. Even employers who arent offended may worry their customers and clients will be. The effect on their bottom line is enough to make them want to put a stop to the behavior or get rid of the offender. If your boss is among them, self-censorship is necessary. Disregarding your employers concerns could affect your ability to advance or hold onto your job. You may also have coworkers who cringe when they hear foul language. In social situations, they can choose to stay away from someone who uses foul language, but at work, they are a captive audience. Try your best to avoid behaviors that annoy coworkers. A harmonious work environment is more important than being able to use profanities on the job. Other Inappropriate Behavior Here are other examples of behavior that employers or coworkers consider inappropriate: Being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while at workTalking on your phone loudlyTaking and posting photographs of your coworkers on social mediaComplaining about your coworkers on social mediaComing to work sickSpreading negativityEating noisilyShowing up late for meetingsUsing your phone during meetings for anything that isnt work-relatedTending to matters of personal hygiene, including clipping your nails or flossing your teeth

What Elon Musk just taught us about becoming indispensable

What Elon Musk just taught us about becoming indispensable What Elon Musk just taught us about becoming indispensable Billionaire Elon Musk, the CEO of three companies, is a busy man who is trying to colonize the solar system, stop the A.I. takeover, and make electric cars go mainstream in our lifetimes. But these visionary goals come at a cost.Multiple anecdotes from employees and partners have shown that Musk can prioritize his work at all costs  - even at the expense of his professional and personal relationships.According to a biography of his life by Ashlee Vance,  Musk once told a Tesla employee who complained of being overworked that Tesla employees “will get to see their families a lot when we go bankrupt.”In that same biography, a story about his longtime personal assistant asking for a raise story teaches us two lessons, depending on if you take the side of Musk or the assistant in this story. If you agree with Musk’s decision to fire his assistant from her role, it teaches you the importance of making yourself as indispensable as possible before asking for a raise. If you side with the assistant, it’s a valuable reminder to not go years with being underpaid and undervalued.According to the Vance biography portrayal, Mary Beth Brown was more than just an executive assistant to Musk; she was also someone who made business decisions for his companies. And by 2014, she had decided she would like to be paid as more than an assistant.Musk: Before you get this raise, I’ll do your jobIn the biography, Brown decided that she wanted to be paid like a SpaceX top executive. When she went to Musk about a raise, he said he was open to the idea - but first, he would conduct an experiment to decide if she merited an executive salary. For the next few weeks, Musk gave Brown time off and took over her duties. When Brown returned, Musk decided that he didn’t need her anymore and that her job was no longer available.“That Musk was willing to let Brown go and in such an unceremonious fashion struck people inside SpaceX and Tesla as scandalous and as the ultimate confirmat ion of his cruel stoicism,” Vance writes. In Vance’s interview with Musk about this story, Musk said that “my conclusion was just that the relationship was not going to work anymore.”Musk offered Brown another position at the company, but she turned down the offer, and he gave her 12 months’ severance. The story is corroborated in a Quora post made by Musk’s ex-wife, Justine Musk, who said that she was also submitted to a similar experiment.“This reminds me of something similar he once said to me, many years ago, after I came back from a week’s visit with my family in Canada - that his life had operated quite smoothly in my absence,” she wrote. “He was letting me know that I was an incompetent house manager.”No employee is indispensable, but you can make it harder for you to be replacedAs a general rule, rating your personal relationships like science experiments won’t endear you to your partners. As an employee, however, you should always come prepared to ass ess your value before you ask others to rate it for you in a salary negotiation.Making yourself valuable  is often a key to winning raises. Workplace expert Lynn Taylor told Business Insider that she advised employees to do regular audits of their responsibilities  so that they could evaluate how integral they were to their company’s success.Bottom-line: no employee is truly indispensable, but by taking on projects and responsibilities, you can add value to your organization and make yourself harder to replace. If you notice that your work is being consistently undervalued, you also have the right to make your case, and leave if the offer’s not good enough. When you’ve gone years without a raise, maybe it’s not the time to reevaluate what you can do better, but what your company should be doing better.According to the biography, that’s what Brown decided. After having her salary raise rejected and turning down the other position, Musk told Vance she never showed up at the o ffice again.

16 Google Calendar Hacks Thatll Make You More Productive

16 Google Calendar Hacks That'll Make You More Productive 16 Google Calendar Hacks That'll Make You More Productive Some things you   think  will be simple actually end up getting really complex. Like those DIY fro-yo places. You walk in thinking you’ll just get a scoop of a single flavor and a spoonful of your favorite topping… but you always walk out with a full bowl and at   least   three toppings - because how could you get Oreo crunch without getting gummy bears, too? Or, ya know, your Google Calendar. Your Google Calendar comes with your personal Gmail address, and you can’t believe how simple it is to use and set up. Then, you might start at a company that uses Google Apps, and suddenly you’ve got to figure out how to remember your best friend’s birthday,  find out when your boss is free for that meeting you need to reschedule and set deadlines for that blog post you have coming up - all at the same time. With the out-of-the-box features in place, Google Calendar starts to feel a lot less simple. Luckily, there are some cool hacks and under-the-radar features that you can use to make your life in Google Calendar much easier to organize. Below are 16 of our favorites. (Got others to add to the list? Let us know in the comments below.) When you first start out on Google Calendar,  you’re given one calendar to start with - it’s the one with your name under “My calendars.” So if you want to use your calendar for multiple things (ex: managing your actual schedule, planning periods of heads-down working and scheduling repeating reminders), you only have one place to do it. But when you’re only working with  one calendar, all of those things get treated equally - meaning you can’t quickly and easily pull up the non-repetitive, important tasks you have for the day. To combat this, just create a new calendar for each part of your life you’d like to keep track of on your Google Calendar. To create a new calendar, click the little arrow next to “My calendars,” and you’ll see an option to “Create new calendar.” Select that, choose  your desired calendar options, and then voil! You’ve got yourself another  calendar. Pro Tip:  You can even color-code each calendar to make it easy for you to pick out what you’ve got to do each day. Ever need to schedule a meeting with several people who have busy schedules ? It can be really annoying to try to figure out when you’re all free.  Thankfully, Google Calendar actually has two features that can do the heavy lifting for you: “Suggested Times” or “Find a Time.” To use either, make sure you’ve added everyone to the event who  needs to attend. If you’d like Google to suggest a time for you to meet, simply select the “Suggested Times” link below your names. A pop-up will show up with some times you can meet. (In my experience, these suggested times tend to be  very early in the morning or very late at night, especially if you have busy people on the invite. But some people prefer to use this feature.) Or, you can choose the tab next to “Event details” called “Find a time” to have Google help you find a time. In this option, you’ll see everyone’s schedules side-by-side. Find an open spot? Claim it with that blue-dashed box and send off your invite. Side note: you can also use a free product like   HubSpot Meetings  to easily schedule meetings without back-and-forth emails. Need to easily set up a face-to-face remote meeting?  Just click the link to “Add video call,” and Google will set up hangout for your event attendees to use. ( Learn more about Google Hangouts here .) I don’t know about you, but  I often find myself  attending meetings that require me to reference a relevant document. Maybe we’re all working off one Google Doc, or perhaps  we’re pouring over an intricate spreadsheet . Regardless, it’s best to make sure that all attendees have the materials they need before the meeting begins. Google Calendar can help. Using a feature in Google Calendar Labs, you can actually attach files directly to your event, so people don’t have to go hunting in their inbox for relevant info.  Here’s how you set it up: First, you have to enable this feature in Google Calendar Labs. Click the “Settings” sprocket in the top right-hand corner of the main Google Calendar page, then choose “Labs.” Then, find the feature “Event attachments” and choose to enable it. Click “Save” at the top, and  you’ll have the option to attach files to your event using Google Drive. Do you work with teammates who live around the world? You might find it’s difficult to figure out what time is appropriate to schedule  meetings with them. Fortunately, you can - by  enabling “World Clock” in Google Calendar Labs. Once it’s enabled and set up to include your preferred time zones, you can easily see what time it is in other time zones, or click on any event and see what time it will take place in your selected  time zones. Want to know  who you’re meeting for lunch without having to click into the event?  Enable the feature  Ã¢€œWho’s my one-on-one with?” in Google Calendar Labs. To set it up, use the  same steps as above. Remember the time you tried to email a large group of people about an event? Maybe you were trying to coordinate a team outing - or just let everyone know they should bring their laptops to the all-hands meeting. Regardless, I bet it was annoying to try to figure out who was actually going to the event and ensure you didn’t forget anyone. Well, this Google Calendar feature will come in handy next time. As long as you’ve added everyone to the event that needs to go, you can easily email everyone in the group by going  into the event details and choosing “Email Guests,” which is located  above the attendee list. Then, an email compose box will come up. Simply type in your message and hit send! I wish I’d known about this  feature the last time I got coffee with someone in downtown Boston. We agreed to meet at Starbucks… but thanks to the multitude of Starbucks locations in Boston, our conversation went something like this: “Okay, so let’s meet at the one on State Street,” I said. “Oh, the one by the Court House?” he asked. “Well, it’s kinda by the Court House, but further down State Street,” I replied. “Oh, you mean the one by Downtown Crossing?” he clarified. Logistics can get fuzzy without a specific address. Thankfully, Google Calendar has a feature that’ll fix all that.  Instead of having the back-and-forth, I could’ve just sent my friend a calendar invite with the specific address in the “Where” box. It integrates with Google Maps so it’s super easy to figure out where you’re meeting and how to get there. As you probably can tell by now, I love Google Calendar… but there is one feature I absolutely hate. If you  have your Google Calendar open as a  tab  in your browser when  it’s 10 minutes before your next event, the 10-minute notification interrupts everything you’re doing and   takes over  your screen. Forget about what you were working on - Google Calendar will suddenly surface its tab with a big pop-up alert coupled with an annoying sound. It’s the worst. Luckily, there’s a Google Calendar Lab feature that you can use to make notifications much less annoying: it’s called “Gentle Notifications.” Instead of interrupting your work, you’ll just get a satisfying *ping* and the page title of your Google Calendar tab will flash the name of the event. (I’ve also got the desktop notification enabled and would highly recommend it.) Ever thought about instigating  Ã¢€œoffice hours” so other  folks in your company can book time with you? Or are you a  part-time  consultant with limited hours to book meetings? Or do you want to limit the times your team can book time with you to certain times of day? If you said “yes” to any of the above, then you should definitely think about  using Google Calendar Appointments. Basically, this feature lets you carve out Appointment slots on your calendar and then share the Appointment calendar link with select people. When they click your Appointment calendar link, they can choose from any of your available options. If they find a time they like, all they have to do is select it - and voil, it’s booked right on your private calendar with the information you need for the meeting. To set up your Appointments, click on a slot you’d like to carve out, just like you’d do for a typical event. But before you start filling out the event details, click “Appointment Slots” (it’s next to “Event” at the very top of the pop-up). New options will appear. If you’d like more control over your Appointments, click “Edit Details,” and you’ll be taken here: Want more tips on integrating Appointments into your typical workflow?   Check out this great post by Likes & Launch . Want to make sure you’re keeping track of holidays in other countries, your favorite sports  team’s schedule, or just know when the sun’s going to rise and set each day? You’ll find these calendars (and more) by heading over to “Interesting Calendars.” To do that, click the arrow next to “Other calendars,” and choose “Browse Interesting Calendars.” From there, choose the calendars you’d like to subscribe to. When you first set up your calendar, you’ll have the option to view it as a  week, month, the next 4 days or as an  agenda.  That “4 days” option? You can switch that out with something else by heading over to your “Settings,” and switching your “Custom view” options. If you’re using Google Apps for your company, you can also control who sees your calendar, what they see and whether they have permissions to edit it. (If you  have an assistant , this tip will be very important to remember.)  You can also make your calendar public, if you wish. To change your sharing settings, click on the arrow next to the preferred  calendar and choose “Share this Calendar.” Then, you’ll be taken to this page. Here, you can choose to do any of the following: When you’re done, be sure to hit “Save.” Are you looking to   really  streamline your Google Calendar efforts? Google Calendar’s got a  ton   of keyboard shortcuts to use, such as: Use a CRM daily? It can be annoying to go back and forth between your Google Calendar and your CRM. Instead, dive into your CRM settings to see if  there’s an existing integration with Google Calendar. HubSpot CRM users , you’re in luck - it’s quick and easy to set up this integration.   Learn more here . And if you want to make your Google Calendar align even more  with your marketing activities, you can even integrate it with your marketing software. For HubSpot customers, you can use Zapier to set up some pretty nifty workflows, such as creating a social media message every time an event starts.   Check out this page for more on how you can set up that integration , as well as some ideas for ways you can integrate the two. 4 things that will make you more motivated, happy, and creative at work

4 things that will make you more motivated, happy, and creative at work 4 things that will make you more motivated, happy, and creative at work Harvard’s Teresa Amabile gave office workers something very simple: diaries. Then she reviewed their ups and downs and drew connections. What she learned was extraordinary. She described the study in her book  The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work. Here are four of the biggest things she learned:1) Progress motivates you more than anything elseNothing is more motivating than  progress  in meaningful work and nothing more taxing than setbacks.Via  The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work:This pattern is what we call the progress principle:  of all the positive events that influence inner work life, the single most powerful is progress in meaningful work; of all the negative events, the single most powerful is the opposite of progress- setbacks in the work. We consider this to be a fundamental management principle: facilitating progress is the most effective way for managers to influe nce inner work life.  Even when progress happens in small steps, a person’s sense of steady forward movement toward an important goal can make all the difference between a great day and a terrible one. This pattern became increasingly obvious as the diaries came in from all the teams in our study.  People’s inner work lives seemed to lift or drag depending on whether or not their projects moved forward, even by small increments. Small wins often had a surprisingly strong positive effect, and small losses a surprisingly strong negative one.  We tested our impressions more rigorously in two ways. Each confirmed the power of progress to dominate inner work life. And it didn’t just affect motivation.  Progress also inspired joy:In an analysis of knowledge workers’ diaries, the authors found that  nothing contributed more to a positive inner work life (the mix of emotions, motivations, and perceptions that is critical to performance) than making progress in meaningful work. If a p erson is motivated and happy at the end of the workday, it’s a good bet that he or she achieved something, however small. If the person drags out of the office disengaged and joyless, a setback is likely to blame.2) Heavy time pressure kills creativity. But zero pressure is lousy tooHeavy time pressure  kills creativity  and morale. On the other hand, having no deadlines made people bored. Much like with  stress, low-to-moderate time pressure produces the best results.Via  The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work:Time pressure is one of the most interesting forces we studied. Although occasional time pressure for short periods can be exhilarating, using extreme time-pressure to stimulate positive inner work life, for weeks on end or even in the short run, is playing with fire.  If managers regularly set impossibly short time-frames or impossibly high workloads, employees become stressed, unhappy, and unmotivated- burned out. Yet, p eople hate being bored. It was rare for any participant in our study to report a day with very low time pressure, such days- when they did occur- were also not conducive to positive inner work life. In general, then, low-to-moderate time pressure seems optimal for sustaining positive thoughts, feelings, and drives.Heavy time pressure had such a negative effect  it could reduce creativity for *days*:We found that on days of the most extreme time pressure, the professionals in our study were 45 percent less likely to come up with a new idea or solve a complex problem. Even worse, there’s a kind of “pressure hangover,” with lower creativity persisting for two days or more.3) You’re more creative when it’s not about the moneyAmabile found artwork done for love was judged to be of higher quality than pieces done for money.Via Dan Pink’s  Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us:Teresa Amabile, the Harvard Business School professor and one of the world’s leading r esearchers on creativity, has frequently tested the effects of contingent rewards on the creative process…“Our results were quite startling,” the researchers wrote. “The  commissioned works were rated as significantly less creative than the non-commissioned works, yet they were not rated as different in technical quality. Moreover, the artists reported feeling significantly more constrained when doing commissioned works than when doing non-commissioned works.”So how can you reward good creative work when money hurts performance? Use bonuses.Via Dan Pink’s  Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us:…Amabile has found in some studies “that the highest levels of creativity were produced by subjects who received a reward as a kind of a bonus.”  So when the poster turns out great, you could buy the design team a case of beer or even hand them a cash bonus without snuffing their creativity. The team didn’t expect any extras and getting them didn’t hinge on a particular outcome. You’re simply offering your appreciation for their stellar work. But keep in mind one ginormous caveat: Repeated “now that” bonuses can quickly become expected “if-then” entitlements- which can ultimately crater effective performance.Or give rewards that support personal motivation. Good examples are recognition, helpful feedback, and time, freedom or resources to pursue exciting ideas.Via  Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else:Even the prospect of direct rewards, normally suffocating to creativity, could be helpful if they were the right kinds of rewards- those that provide more time, freedom, or resources to pursue exciting ideas. These findings prompted Amabile to revise her hypothesis: Intrinsic motivation is still best, and extrinsic motivation that’s controlling is still detrimental to creativity, but extrinsic motivators that reinforce intrinsic drives can be highly effective.4)  Want to be more creative? Get happy“Overall, the more positive a person’s mood on a given day, the more creative thinking he did that day.” There was even a carryover effect for the next two days after.Via  The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work:Our diary study revealed a definitive connection between positive emotion and creativity. We looked at specific emotions as well as overall mood (the aggregate of a person’s positive and negative emotions during the day). Overall, the more positive a person’s mood on a given day, the more creative thinking he did that day. Across all study participants, there was a 50 percent increase in the odds of having a creative idea on days when people reported positive moods, compared with days when they reported negative moods. And:We even found a surprising carryover effect showing that creativity follows from positive emotion.  The more positive a person’s mood on a given day, the more creative thinki ng he did the next day- and, to some extent, the day after that- even taking into account his moods on those later days.  This may be due to what psychologists call an incubation effect. Pleasant moods stimulate greater breadth in thinking- greater cognitive variation- which can linger and even build over a day or more. Such cognitive variation can lead to new insights at work.Try it yourselfKeep a work diary and see what connections you can make between what happens at the office and how you feel. 3 Toxic Habits To Ditch To Have A Good Job Search

3 Toxic Habits To Ditch To Have A Good Job Search 3 Toxic Habits To Ditch To Have A Good Job Search Job search not quite going like you thought it would? Could be because you’re using the same job search techniques you used the last time you got a job. What you need to understand is that what got you where you were last time will not necessarily get you where you want to be this time. The same old habits don’t always perform for you as they once did. So let’s talk about 3 common job search habits you need to ditch in order to have a successful job search. Ditch The Spray & Pray Method This applies to blasting your resume all over the Internet, sending group emails (in which everyone can see everyone else’s email address â€" no bueno) asking for leads, and reaching out blindly to every recruiter you never heard of â€" and who never heard of you. I just had a candidate ask me, “Jewel, does your professional resume service package include sending out resumes and cover letters to recruiters, as in, all in one shot?” Sir, no. This was my longer answer, “We long ago discontinued the service to send candidates’ resumes and cover letters on their behalf, because my professional opinion was and is that this is not a credible service. While the concept sounds enticing from the candidate’s perspective, the results indicate that this type of email blasting delivers results even less impressive than the job boards.” No spraying and praying. It’s a bad habit that’s keeping your job search stuck exactly where it is. Ditch Treating The Job Boards Like The Be All End All It sure feels wonderful: finding all these openings online, hitting “apply” and “submit,” and thinking you’re really taking action. But nope. The job boards aren’t the end. They’re just the beginning. Treat the job boards like the spring boards for your job search. Use them for intel: you can see who’s hiring, where, and the onus is on you to identify the relevant decision maker. For that, click on over to LinkedIn to ferret out the recruiter, HR person, or functional decision maker. Ditch The Imposter Keywords, Please & Thank You In Advance You are not detail-oriented.
